These are just a few examples of the many different types of milling cutter’s available on the tooling market today. Furthermore, milling cutters are available in a variety of materials. Each suited to a particular task. For instance, while carbide end mills are perfectly suited to cutting ferrous and nonferrous metals, PCD end mills are much better for milling composite materials.

End mills are the most common type of milling cutter used in a vertical operation. Defined by the teeth engraved into the end and the sides of the mill. Different types of end mill will produce a different shape of hole. Such as, rounded, or ball-nosed end mills, which leave a rounded-off bottom.

Some milling cutters are designed to carve a hole for a specific application. One example of this is threading mills. A threading mill is a cutting tool constructed with a distinct helix around its shaft. This mills a pre-carved screw thread.

Roughing cutters, sometimes referred to as roughing end mills, roughing end cutters, or ripper cutters. Designed with deep flutes and serrated teeth, to maximise the amount and speed of material removed. Usually used for high-volume operations. However, roughing cutters leave a rough finish that will need further attention before the workpiece is ready.

This set of 25 brad point bits are made from M2 high speed steel and are the finest wood drill bits that we have ever offered. They feature two lips on the perimeter, that finely score the circumference of the hole, prior to the chipping bevels removing the stock. This results in minimal fibre pull and tearing of the wood leaving extremely clean holes in hardwoods, softwoods and composite woods. The bits are back tapered from the cutting edge to minimise friction and prevent binding and have been fully ground to give precise concentricity to ensure a highly accurate hole. The deep flutes are polished to allow fast chip clearance, preventing the build up of swarf in the flutes, resulting in smooth, scorch-free side walls. M2 high speed steel is extremely hard wearing and retains its hardness over prolonged use, resulting in a bit that will not deform and which will always keep the same cutting geometry over its lifetime. After hardening these bits are tempered to reduce brittleness and increase ductility and toughness, staying sharp 10 times longer than carbon steel brad point bits. This set contains 25 metric bits ranging from 1mm to 13mm in 0.5mm increments 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, 7.5mm, 8mm, 8.5mm, 9mm, 9.5mm, 10mm, 1.5mm, 11mm, 11.5mm, 12mm, 12.5mm and 13mm and is supplied in a bespoke wooden presentation box. The bits are certified to ensure the dimensional accuracy of the hole. ©

As with some of these other reviews, I’d been making do with hss bits for years as I’d only had rubbish brad point drill bits in the past, so was always quite frustrated with how clean the hole never was. The fairly aggressive cutting profile on these bits means you end up with a clean hole on entry an exit pretty easily so I’d definitely recommend them

Milling Cutters are a vital tool for industrial or large-scale milling, and an integral part of a milling machine. The cutter, as the name may suggest, is the part of the milling machine that is responsible for cutting and removing material from a workpiece. During operation, the milling cutter rotates rapidly, while it making contact with the workpiece. Carving away material until the desired shape has been achieved. As such, milling cutters are always made from a stronger material than the workpiece.

Purchased due to a rather unique project I'm building, a digital 4 manual church organ designed for blind organists, as I'm blind myself. Using these beautifully sharp, clean cutting bits with a woodpeckers autoline drill guide and my favourite cordless drill, I'm getting clean and precise holes without major breakout. Purchased these as I wasn't in the mood to pay famag or fisch prices and rutlands is my trusted go-to brand for all things nice and sharp. So you know, this set comes in a nicely presented wooden case with a foam liner and bits organised perfectly. I had room for two depth stops with a little careful foam cutting, so I have a dedicated drill case. I'm so pleased I purchased these and would highly recommend these to anyone who wants the perfect, clean holes in hard and soft woods.

Like everthing I have ordered from Rutlands, these brad drill bits did not disappoint. Quality is superb and as usual sent out in a very nice wooden box.

Designed to be used after, finishing cutters are the opposite of roughing cutters. These cutters have plenty of flutes and a smooth exterior to leave a clean, professional finish on the workpiece. It’s possible to purchase hybrid roughing and finishing cutters that boast high material excavation with a smooth finish.

I bought this set after decades of 'making do' with HSS twist bits to drill timber, and I wish I had bought them decades ago. They are very true, with no discernible 'wobble' at the point. In my drill stand the 13mm largest bit drilled a test hole cleanly at BOTH entry and exit, which is a major step forward for me. The wooden box is a piece of work in its own right - even the catches are screwed on, not tacked. I can honestly recommend this set, it's a treasure.

“Milling cutter” is the umbrella term referring to all cutting tools used as part of a milling machine or to perform milling operations. A Milling cutter comes in many forms for different applications. From those designed to maximise excavated material to those designed to leave a smooth finish. Milling cutters specially designed for certain tasks may have a bespoke shape. For Example, they may have serrated teeth, or a specific number of flutes – grooves. Designed to carry removed material back up the cutter and way from the workpiece. To make them better suited for that application.

I wanted a good set of bits and i can honestly say that these did not dissapoint! they are very good quality, housed in a nice wooden box. They are work buying if you need a full set of quality bits.
