The JC solid-carbide end mill group, which includes the JC875 solid-carbide router, delivers superior surface finishes via a special edge treatment that prevents wear and ensures the longest possible tool life. An added diamond coating further boosts the tool’s wear resistance, allowing it to withstand the highly abrasive properties of composite materials. Seco also imparted a special chip-splitting design to the end mill for clean cutting actions. Diameter ranges for the JC875 are from 3 mm to 12 mm, with .250" to .500" imperial sizes also available.

Another upgrade is Shark-Drill, an indexable-insert drill for diameters of 9.5 to 114 mm. The nickel-plated carrier tool with integrated coolant supply is available with a straight or spiral flute for Weldon or Morse tapered holders. For example, Shark-Drill can be used as a rotating tool (spiral flute) while the workpiece is stationary, or as a stationary tool (straight flute) while the workpiece is rotating.

The Arno AKB drill offers optimised swarf chambers which extend right up to the collar. In addition, AKB drills are coated and polished, which improves swarf evacuation, while an internal coolant channel allows direct cooling of the flute. With Torx-Plus screws, the inserts can be changed quickly. Four geometries for steel and non-ferrous metals ensure a range of applications can be covered.

Overall, all four of these geometries incorporate special advanced designs so that composite workpiece materials remain undamaged during the machining process. As a result, users of these end mills can expect clean, controlled cuts for high surface finish quality.

Arno has strengthened its line-up of drilling tools, with particular reference to its AKB short-hole drill.

With Shark-Drill2, Arno has developed a drilling system that combines the advantages of a solid-carbide twist drill with interchangeable cutting inserts. Equipped with a carbide insert which can be replaced while the tool remains in the machine, this tool can operate at very high feed rates. Drilling depths of 2xD, 3xD, 5xD and 8xD are possible with diameters from 14 to 32 mm.

For those who want to combine drilling and milling, Shark-Cut is a multifunction tool that can do both. Mini, Standard and Rebore are three variants that make drilling possible for diameters of 4, 8 and 12 mm respectively. Likewise, internal and external diameters can be machined and flat surfaces created. This combination tool thus reduces the number of tool changes required and accelerates the respective processes.

Seco recently added new JPD and JC end mills to its line of Jabro products developed specifically for cutting composite materials. These end mills consist of four new geometries that bring fast, efficient cutting to applications involving workpiece materials such as carbon and glass fibre composites as well as carbon reinforced plastics (CRFP).

The JPD group of solid-carbide end mills, which consists of the JPD880 square end mill, JPD850 ball nose end mill and JPD840 compression-type end mill, features brazed polycrystalline diamond plates to achieve fast, efficient cutting and long tool life. Main PCD-plated bodies include through-coolant channels for highly effective chip and dust evacuation. The JPD880 and JPD840 end mills are available in diameters that range from 6 mm to 16 mm, while the JPD850 covers diameters from 4 mm to 16 mm. Two PCD plate lengths – normal and long – are also available for the JPD880.

The Shark-Drill series includes 12 variants for drilling depths up to 32xD, or from 290 to 939 mm. Three geometries for cutting inserts – universal, AS with good centring properties and flat-bottom drilling inserts – cover a range of machining applications. With HSS indexable inserts, Shark-Drill is said to be a universal and cost-effective problem-solver.
