A Reddit for Machinists of all varieties. From Old School conventional guys, to CNC Programmers, to the up and coming next generation.

I have to drill about 1.5" thru in 3 places with a 9mm carbide drill and my issue is chip breakage. By the time I get through the first hole I got a nest around the tool and no coolant penetration.

I generally work with mild steels and using a drill at a similar size I spin at 3000 (machine max) and push anywhere between 15 and 25 IPM with great chip evacuation.

Since I'm not familiar with the material I used FSWizard for speed and feed. It recommended 1800 RPM at 9 IPM. Also I'm using a G81 cycle, I tried using a G83 with 3, and then 6 full retract pecks and it would still wrap up. The machine I'm on is old and beat up and does not like small rapid movements so a G87 cycle is off the table. G87 peck results in a .01" retract and the Z will over travel back down and no lube hit the bottom of the hole.
