When it comes to drills, there are two easily identifiable parts you need to know about – the shank and the chuck. Here’s a little information to help you understand more about how drills and drill bits work:

Smile Dentistry and Veneers are Just a Band-Aid - Smile dentistry is just a bandage because the bite is the problem and it never gets corrected. Instead, the patient gets porcelain veneers that cause the lower teeth to wear even faster, and the veneers make the bite deeper. The most important reason that veneers are just a Band-Aid is that they don’t correct the bite and they don’t improve the jawline or the shape of the patient’s face. VENLAY® restorations do it by improving the shapes and biting surfaces of your teeth to align the jaw and the TMJ.

This patient's lips look thin, his lower face is not supported, his chin and his skull are not in alignment, and neither is his bite. The Face Lift Dentistry® Method is about “optimizing” the jaw position to your facial structures.

This set is perfect for creating or repairing threads on a variety of materials, including copper, aluminum, and unalloyed or low alloyed steel.

The best way to get a misaligned jaw corrected is for the dentist to have the knowledge, rather than just guess, the position of the lower jaw. Most of the time, the dentist really does not know where the jaw should be located; he or she simply try temporary teeth, or night guards or a smile guide. As one patient said, “it was tap, tap, tap,… and then the dentist would grind on the temporary teeth hoping I would find some comfort”.

Like auger bits, self-feed bits also feature a screw tip for positioning the bit. They create clean, precise holes, as well. However, since they do not channel the dust away from the hole as they work, you must halt the operation periodically to clear the dust away.

Plug cutters are helpful in professional projects, as they drill holes into the wood while cutting the wood plugs you require to hide recessed fasteners.

Lower jaw pain is usually the result of clenching and grinding. Jaw muscle pain is a secondary part of the problem with the bite not functioning in harmony with the TMJ. Head, neck and jaw pain contribute to the overall stress on the body, and over time it can decrease the quality of life. Crooked jaw correction can be accomplished without drugs, surgery and without drilling away your teeth because:

This creates a much more efficient drilling process with burr-free holes in tubing, sheet metal, and iron bar stock. Annular cutter bits on our site are made from Cobalt High-Speed Steel.

“I wore orthodontic braces three times.” Braces or clear aligners can straighten teeth, but cannot address worn down teeth. In the Before-Photo on the left, it is evident that the top teeth are badly worn down, which is the primary reason for his lower jaw being pushed back, making his chin look small.

As mentioned earlier, drilling through tile requires a specialist drill bit – regular or even masonry bits simply won’t do the job as they’re not strong enough to penetrate tiles’ hard surfaces. Instead, you should opt for either carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped drill bits.

The best drill bits for metal drilling in ascending order in terms of cost are High-Speed Steel (HSS) bits, Black Oxide bits, Cobalt steel bits, and Titanium bits. For drilling large holes in thin or soft metals, you can use a hole saw which can also be used with a cordless drill.

Most drill bit sets are sold in a case with space to hold each bit in place. This keeps the drill bits from being nicked or scratched and also provides excellent organization.

By using JawTrac® to locate the correct jaw position and VENLAY® Restorations to restore the teeth, his bite is now corrected and his facial features optimized.

Quarter-inch hex shank bits are intended to be used on 1/4-inch impact drivers and can be quickly changed. SDS (slotted drive system) shanks are used for concrete drills and demolition bits and work specifically with SDS-Plus and SDS-Max rotary hammer drills.

Titanium Nitride (Tin): A more expensive coating that increases the hardness of the bit and provides a thermal barrier resulting in increased production rates and longer tool life in harder materials.

The shank is the end of the drill bit that fits into the drill and is secured by the chuck. A round shank helps to center a bit in the chuck more accurately. The flat surfaces on a hex shank allow the chuck to grip the drill bit more securely.

Brad-point bits come in handy when you need to make clean and precise holes. They come with rubber stoppers to allow you to set a particular depth. Their precision makes them a popular bit among woodworkers.

Where did my upper teeth go? They did not go anywhere; they just wore down as the overbite got deeper, aggravating jaw misalignment, resulting in health problems and premature facial aging.

These are what you use when looking to create holes in bricks, stones, or concrete. Due to the tough nature of those materials, masonry bits wear out quickly, meaning that you will need to replace them frequently.

Auger bits have a screw tip that creates the initial hole for the rest of the bit to fall. As a result, holes by auger bits are incredibly clean and precise.

If your set didn’t come with a case or you’ve been buying individual drill bits, add a storage box with dividers to your toolset. Don’t store more than two bits together and use a permanent marker to mark each space with the size and type of drill bit stored there.

Proper drill bit maintenance is not much different from maintenance for most tools, and it helps prolong the life of your drill bits and keeps them ready for the next job.

A crooked or uneven jaw may be triggered by a multitude of reasons, often caused by simple wear-and-tear. Inevitably, as we age, the teeth start wearing down, or we may lose teeth due to injury or neglect. Any preexisting and untreated bite conditions, such as an overbite or underbite, would cause undue wear on tooth enamel and accelerate the misalignment. As the TMJ tries to cope with ongoing changes in the bite, it no longer functions as intended, resulting in lower jaw pain, headaches, and even posture problems. Mildly stated, we probably all have misaligned jaws as none of us can escape aging.

The chuck is the part of the drill that attaches the drill bit. Most power drills for home use have a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch chuck. Larger chucks come in 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch sizes but are usually fitted on heavy-duty and industrial power drills and drill presses.

These are special types of bits that can drill through plastic, tiles, glass, marble, and brick. They can also withstand high temperatures.

One of the reasons that a patient is not sleeping well is because they have lost room for their tongues. Why? The teeth have worn down to such a degree that their jaw closes too far and the jaw is pushed back towards the patient’s ears when they close their teeth together. The teeth are too short for the structure of the jaw and the TMJ position, so the patients face gets shorter, they don’t sleep very well, they are not as energized and you cannot see their upper teeth when they talk.

Disalignment or misalignment

These are the bits to use when looking to drill into thick and dry wood. Thanks to their innovative design, you do not have to apply a lot of pressure when drilling into tough materials.

Named after their tip that resembles a series of pyramid-shaped steps, these bits are what professionals use to drill into sheet metal. Their stepped design allows you to create holes with varying diameters. Step bits are renowned for their versatility.

Tin also provides the same benefits as black and bronze oxide. Tin-coated bits are suitable for drilling iron and steel as well as aluminum, magnesium, etc.

Caring for your drill bits can also be a matter of safety; dull or damaged drill bits can create problems both in the work and for the worker.

When a patient has straight teeth and still has jaw problems most of the time the subsequent jaw position is not aligned with the TMJ. There is a physical conflict between the jaw position and the TMJ. The teeth are straight, but the bite is misaligned. Patients with an uneven jaw tend to clench and grind their teeth more often. The solution is to get your jaw aligned without drugs, surgery, trauma and get it aligned quickly.

Used to drill larger thru-holes in metal (7/16″ and up), these bits require a special machine. Similar to a hole saw, annular cutter bits cut the outer diameter of the hole and leave a solid center slug.

Replacing Lost Tooth Enamel with Porcelain Crowns - When you lose the enamel on your teeth by grinding at night, most dentists will recommend porcelain crowns as a way to replace lost tooth enamel. They will grind down your short tooth in order to make it longer. This is not a good idea anymore, but this is the only method being taught.

Each spot is marked for the bit’s size and type, making it easy to quickly find the right bit for the project you are completing.

Neuromuscular Dentistry - The dentist uses computers and electronics to try to find the jaw location that would be optimal for the patient. This is not a cosmetic method; it is a trial and error method with multiple sittings with electrodes on the muscles with the neuromuscular dentist trying to find the ideal jaw alignment from a purely functional perspective.

Face Lift Dentistry® is a specialty area not recognized by the ADA. Dr. Sam Muslin developed this method and is a General Dentist that received the Master of the Academy of General Dentistry Award in 1998 and was awarded by the International College of Dentists.

Fixing a misaligned jaw with my JawTrac® Jaw Position Technology is a mechanical solution for a mechanical problem: no drugs, no surgery, no drilling or grinding your teeth.

Black Oxide: The most economical coating. Black oxide adds corrosion protection, increases tempering and stress relieving of the bit, reduces galling and chip welding, and aids in retaining drilling lubricants.

A misaligned bite is a leading reason for faces to look older, especially when the teeth wear down. The face lost support from the right jaw position which is also getting pushed towards the patient's ears. The jaw gets pushed back by the deep overbite, the face gets shorter from the tooth wear and, now the entire face looks older. This premature aging process is reversed with anti-aging Face Lift Dentistry®.
