“That tonight made us better,” Hill said. “Booker T is a good football team when they’re fresh. But we wore them out. Our experience, we’ve been there, or a lot of us have. They haven’t with their whole group, but they’ll be there, trust me.

“I’ve always said you get better between game one and game two than at any time of the year. We have to go over there next week and take advantage of that.”

Tate Brooksher had two touchdowns to lead Gore beat Wilburton 20-8. He rushed for one score and then threw a touchdown pass to Devon Mannon. Cole Brooksher, Tate’s brother, gave the Pirates (1-0) their first points of the night in the third quarter via a 60-yard punt return to put Gore up, 6-0.

Tulsa Washington, who stunningly missed the postseason entirely last year and welcomed a new head coach as the Hornets fall into 5A in 2024, was on the verge of drawing even with Muskogee midway through the third quarter.

“That changed the game,” said Roughers head coach Travis Hill. “We’ve still got quite a few guys on the defensive side of the ball that I think they’re talented. Next year, a lot of those guys will be the ones coming back.”

LaTavion Johnson, who returns in the backfield and now forms part of the Thunder and Lightning punch, had his time in the spotlight. Johnson came in at the start of the second quarter and had a pair of five-yard runs, the last for a score, both coming after Ficklin connected with tight end Gervon Washington for 32 yards to the 10.

Muskogee’s P.J. Wallace breaks a Tulsa Washington tackle for a solid game during Friday’s game at Rougher Village. The Bartlesville move-in had 130 yards on 15 carries as the Roughers opened the season with a 56-21 win over the Hornets.

Ficklin, the Phoenix MVP in 2023 who is headed for Texas State in 2025, was 9-of-16 for 190 yards and three TDs. He struggled to get in the groove in the first half, going 6-of-11 for 96 yards, but 50 of that came on his first touchdown pass of the night to Ondraye Beasley. He was sacked twice in the half.

Less than two minutes later, Hornets quarterback Levi Brooks was picked again, this time by Ondraye Beasley, who took it back 32 yards for a 35-14 lead.

Muskogee also got some ground success with Bartlesville move-in P.J. Wallace. He had 130 yards on 15 carries. He didn’t score, but his 29-yard run set up a first-and-goal at the 8 on the opening possession of the game, capped by Ficklin’s 1-yard run on the 12th play of the drive that took half the opening quarter.

Kenyon Goodson’s 95-yard interception return stole the momentum after the Hornets took advantage of a turnover off Rougher quarterback Jamarian Ficklin’s fumble, and Muskogee posted 28 unanswered points to run away with a 56-21 win Friday night at Rougher Village.

Brooks finished 14-of-26 for 267 yards against a defense that’s not yet polished, but took a step toward that Friday night with a trip to Rogers, Ark., coming next week.

“In my head I was like I want to get a stop right here,” said Goodson. “I was waiting all day for a chance and I saw the quarterback’s eyes, made a move in that direction and took it back to the house.”

In that time, Muskogee held the Hornets to a minus 17 yards and no first downs. BTW got back on its feet with Brooks taking his team 66 yards on a drive capped by a 6-yard touchdown catch by Jaymian Compton with 6:05 to play.
