The earliest uses of materials including steels were for the manufacture of rudimentary tools and it is interesting, therefore, to consider the chronological developments of tool materials. Naturally occurring ceramics were amongst the earliest materials used for tools although it is only in recent years that controlled manufacturing methods have enabled ceramic tools of good quality to be used for metal machining. Some of the major developments in the evolution of tool materials are listed in Table 4.1.
