I've considered putting out HSS tools instead. Obviously they'd be much more durable, but realistically they're not going to ever get sharpened properly because the engineers/designers don't know how, and we don't have time for that upkeep.

Is there an insert design that is very durable without being too expensive? Dulling isn't really an issue, it's more about chipping. Also this is mostly for us to put out for the normies to use, we of course have our own good tools that we keep locked away just for us.

We're a prototyping shop that is open to use by our engineers and designers who have pretty basic knowledge of how to use the machinery. And I love my coworkers, they're great, but they just don't know much about machining.

This of course means that we have to contend with misuse of tools, and currently one of the ways that's rearing it's head is that our lathe inserts are being chipped faster than they should; we have to rotate/replace them every day or two even with only a few uses. We've been buying generic TPMT inserts because they're cheap and since we know they're going to get destroyed, we don't want to be wrecking $20 inserts all the time. But we would like them to get destroyed less.
