Winning with Statistics by Example My aim here is to show the power of statistics or, as some may say, if you torture the data long enough, you will get the answer you want. With the J.P. Morgan run starting in London on Wednesday, I thought I would recall last year’s event where Capacitas entered a team. The traditional view of racing is that the person with the fastest time is the winner, and last year from team Capacitas, this was Adam O., completing in 25.71 minutes. I returned what I think is a respectable 35.28 minutes over the 5.6K. However, with statistics, I think we can have a different view of who won! As a general rule, the older you get, the less athletic you become. [You young folks, enjoy getting out of a chair without making a grunting noise while you still can!] Therefore, I think we should view the results in terms of age and running levels. Luckily, the internet provides some base data for 5K runs, which I have adjusted to 5.6K via simple extrapolation, as shown in the graphic. Data courtesy of Marathon Handbook So, let’s look at the so-called “winner” Adam, whose time is 25.71 minutes. I don’t think Adam is a novice in anything, so let’s compare his time against the average for his age group and intermediate running level. He was a little slower for his category, working out as (25.71-25.22)/25.22 = 1.94% slower than the average. As for me, who some may have noticed (if you look carefully), I am a little older. Even if I consider myself a novice (I trained a bit but not much), my 35.47 is (35.47-34.94)/34.94 = 1.51% slower than the average for my skill and age group. Hence, I am closer to the expected average for my age and skill and therefore, I beat Adam. So sorry Adam, you don’t win. Well, you did if you consider the old-fashioned, lazy approach of the first to cross the line malarkey! This past week, I was able to watch Liam, our youngest, compete in a number of regional track and field events for his school region. He qualified after winning in the area trials and now was up against people from all over the Durham area of Ontario - with some who had already hit their growth spurts, were faster and who competed in clubs on a regular basis (Liam, like many kids there, only jumps on the track train when it shows up on the school calendar). As I watched the night trials, I noticed something. The kids always ran to the competition around them. If they were in a slow heat, those who won would WIN but they wouldn't dominate (Likely to save power for the BIG race, a bit of gamesmanship, etc). The faster ones were influenced by those around them and ran like them, which conversely caused the others to slow down too. Meanwhile if the leader set a powerful pace, it forced the others in their heat to really try - either to win or to qualify by time. The lesson I left with? Who we run alongside matters. Who we let influence us matters. If the ones in front of us and beside us jog when they should run, chances are, we'll follow their lead. In the same vein, we have that same influence on others around us too. Hard work hopefully inspires hard work from those around us. Q: Who's inspiring you to "run" your best today? Have you heard about the Fosbury flop? It changed my perspective on innovation, I bet it will change yours too. The high jump is a competitive sport in which competitors attempt to clear a high bar without touching it. In the past, high jumpers used traditional techniques such as scissoring or jumping forward or sideways. But Dick Fosbury changed everything. He began experimenting with new ways to play the sport. In particular, he avoided the conventional forward or side-to-side front approaches. Instead, he considered an angled approach that resulted in a backbend as he moved backwards on the bar. Fosbury's method was initially criticised, with some comparing it to "airborne seizure" and "flopping fish in a boat". However, he used it to win gold and set a new record at the 1968 Olympics. The Fosbury Flop (as it's known) took the sport to the next level and is still used today 50 years later. Lesson: True innovation is often met with ridicule. Surviving this disbelief is the price of acceptance for someone who wants to change their status quo. #innovation

This week's 'Thursday's Thought' is one that I feel transcends purely a sporting record, and shines a light on true grit, determination, resilience, and belief. Attributes we can all learn from. Overnight Sir Mark Cavendish KBE (Cav) broke the long-standing record for the most Tour De France (TDF) stage wins (35), previously held by Eddy Merckx. Now this is not only a sporting 'win' but, when you begin to understand Cav's journey, one that has overcome more than most Athletes.. Cav won his first TDF stage back in 2008, and across his career has 165 professional wins, including World Championships on the Road and the Track. Alongside his wins, he has had to overcome two bouts of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), and numerous injuries that kept him from breaking this record. Now none of us are Cav, but why I chose this as my weekly post, is that in our own careers we are identified as being talented early in our pathway, just as Cav's early Coaches and Mentors saw such talent. The support of those around us, that can see our potential, is another parallel with Elite Athletes, and when times get tough, when we have set backs, like Athletes we double down and 'get back in the saddle' in our work. We may not ever stand on the top step of the dais, or wear the rainbow or green jersey, but once again we can all learn from Athletes like Cav and try to get to the line first, in our own race; with grit, determination, resilience, and belief.
