7. Dip drill bits in water to cool them off. Keep a small container of cold water on hand and submerge your bits between drilling every few inches.

Pull back with every inch. “Every inch or so that you drill, pull out the bit and blow it off,” recommends BobVila.com. “Otherwise, when drilling wood, any flakes or chips of wood will get packed into the flutes of the bit, becoming very hot. The hotter a drill bit gets, the faster it dulls, requiring more frequent sharpening.”

11. Don’t push all the way through. If drilling completely through a board, stop as soon as the very tip of the bit emerges out the other side. Pushing all the way through can result in a jagged-looking cut. Instead, remove the bit and, using the small hole on the back of the board, finish drilling from the opposite side.

9. Listen to your drill. If your drill begins jamming or feels like it’s working harder than it should, pull it back to clear the hole of debris.

1. Select the right drill bits for the job. “You’ll always want to check that you’re using a drill bit of the appropriate style and material for whatever you’re cutting. 3. Make an indent where your hole will go. For maximum precision, use a nail or punch to create a small indention in the wood or sheet metal you're drilling. For larger holes in metal or hardwood, you may need to drill a pilot hole.

Slow down as the bit approaches the far side. “When a drill bit breaks through the far side rapidly — or if you are applying considerable weight to the drill — the edges of the exit hole will probably be ragged, leaving burrs if the material is metal or tearing out large chips from the wood. Sometimes, too, a workpiece that isn’t properly fixed in place will spin on the drill as it passes through the far side.”

12. Use two sets of bits. To keep bits sharper and in better shape for longer, invest in another set of bits. Use the new bits to start holes, then switch to your older, sharpened set to finish boring.

5. Keep considering speed. After starting the hole, continue at slow-medium speed if drilling metal or masonry. Increase speed to fast, however, if drilling through wood.

4. Don’t go too fast. Position your drill bit at the center point of the indentation, and start drilling slowly to ensure it doesn’t wander from the center.

8. Don’t force the drill. Do not press so hard that the drill groans. This is bad for the machine and too much pressure can dull or break your bit and, counterintuitively, will not speed up the process.
