Working with metal can be hazardous, especially when using power tools like drill bits. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask, to protect yourself from flying debris and metal shavings. Additionally, ensure that the workpiece is securely clamped to avoid any unexpected movement during drilling, which can lead to accidents or damage to the material.
High-quality drill bits for metal are designed to have optimal cutting speeds. They are engineered with sharp cutting edges and flutes that efficiently remove material as the bit rotates. The combination of the right cutting speed and sharpness allows these drill bits to effortlessly penetrate metal surfaces, reducing the drilling time and minimizing the risk of bit breakage.
Get Cobalt HSS from any reputable manufacturer. Examples of such would be Dormer, Presto, etc. They usually have a 135 degree drill point angle, whereas normal HSS bits have a 118 degree point angle. Worth remembering if you have any kind of drill sharpening jig available to you. 135 degree points are not as easy to sharpen. On the whole though, despite the potential hassle you might encounter when sharpening them, they are much better than the average HSS drill bit, their performance on awkward materials like Stainless is much better.
Most sets come in .5mm increments, but it always seems quite hard to buy single .5mm inbetween sized bits. Funny old world. ?
One important factor to consider when using metal drill bits is the type of metal you are working with. Different metals have different hardness levels, which can affect the drilling process. For example, drilling through soft metals like aluminum requires less force and a higher speed, while drilling through harder metals like stainless steel requires more force and a slower speed.
