PVC chamfer Toolhome depot

Not a plumber just an electrician I'm training. I've noticed that a lot of device installation instructions (water heaters, drain packages, etc.) say PVC must be chamfered before fitting. I don't think I've ever actually seen this happen out in the field. Is that a thing?
