Yes, if 'normal' means HSS. Use lots of a suitable lubricant (Rocol RTD is one good one for the job). Chamfer the end of the rod before you start.
I have the M8 die, it does have a split in it, it'a a good quality die as it's from by brothers engineering kit, he's an aircraft engineer and would never buy cheap tools especially if supplied via the RAF

The important thing with stainless is not to let the tool rub. When drilling etc, the tool must keep cutting otherwise the surface will work harden. That shouldn't be a problem with your die, but use plenty of pressure to get it started. You'll find it quite hard work compared with threading mild steel.

Ideally you will have a split die not a hex die. Make sure you have the die opened up with the middle screw for the first cut then adjust the next cut to fit the nut correctly.
I need to hand make a curtain rail which will need a M8 thread tapped on to each end, will a normal die for steel cut stainless steel?

And I'd also take the precaution of going quite slowly too - making sure you clear the swarf with a back-turn every 180 degrees (I'm not a metal worker either!!!!)

This means I can only have a fixing at the ends so to leave the rail free for sliding rings. As the top of the door is slightly curved the ends of the S/S rail will bolt on to eye bolts fitted either side of the door frame, I can then tension the rail through the eye of the bolt creating the slight upward curve and when achieved can lock it tightly in place with a nut and dome nut on each end to finish off neatly. Could even back up with a grub screw either end, I'll only bother though if the rail moves.
I also have the tool to fit the die, I did note 3 small locking grub screws one central slightly larger which I assume goes where the split is to widen and decrease the thread cut. I only need a 30mm thread length on each end.

I've been huntting on the net and did out the same. I can thread normal steel so it seems SS is much the same process so I should have little problem.
again yes you can thread s/s we did 8mm threads on maded up fittings often with bog standard split dies, method as advised by biggles, which is how it should be done threading m/s also gives a much better finish to the cut doing it in stages. By the way the bed curtains around the fixed double on our ex-boat was a s/s rod but 6mm supported by small cup hooks and eyes.

I have several. Hex dies (die nuts) are not really made for cutting new threads, though, but for cleaning up damaged threads. You would struggle to get a straight start to the thread with one, even in mild steel, trying to cut a thread in stainless with one could be a nightmare.

It seems like a lot of hassel for a curtain rail, but this is for the cratch doors 4 f/t wide, we've had a curtain made with double thermal lining as well as good quality material so it weighs 5 kilos and is designed to hang flat against the doors (no pleats) and in one width not a split curttain or pair.

I did wonder as drilling through S/S can be a nightmare even with a pillar drill although top quality drill bits would have helped. I had to drill 8 x 10mm holes through some 6mm thick 316 stainless, I gave up and let a local engineer do it for me
