At out makerspace we suggest the new user buy one of the $80 endmill sets sold on places like Amazon. The endmills are OK, they work well. There are usually 20 in the kit, 3/16 to 3/4", 2 and 4 flute. As you break or dull them, they can be replaced by higher grace cutters. The MR-1 is limited to 1/2" shanks, so the 5/8" and 3/4" might not be so useful unless you turn the shanks down. On the sets we get, the 9/16" end mills have 1/2" shanks. I don’t know how deep the MR-1 spindle is. Double end-mills may be a problem.

This will be my first CNC mill and I am looking forward to learning, machining and of course breaking stuff lol. I have lathe and steel fabrication experience, and have run manual mills, but not this sort of machine - looks like a lot of fun.

I am not sure its worth initially to invest in good tooling (ie $$$) given I will be on the learning curve and may break a few lol.

Machining bituses

Strongly recommend the use of variable flute and variable pitch carbide end mills. Also be sure to use high helix end mills with specific geometry needed for aluminum cutting.

I will need to source an assortment of cutting bits, and I know that Langmuir is offering cutters, but it always good to have alternatives to compare. For the experienced guys on the forum, where are the good sources for cutters and preferred brands? I think. initially most of my cutting will be aluminum, but will do steel as well.
