If safety is your main concern, simply request to have all sharp edges removed. ASM includes deburring as part of their standard processes, which is usually sufficient to achieve smooth and safe edges without additional specifications.
If chamfers and radii are not critical to your design, it is best not to dimension them on your print or model to avoid unnecessary costs. Instead, add a note to your print asking to “remove all sharp edges.” For critical dimensions, include them on your print, and ASM will ensure they are machined to meet precise specifications.
Annually Workshops for Warriors has the capacity to provide 150 veterans its welding and machining program in current facility. Unfortunately, the need among veterans for vocational education and job placement outstrips the available resources to provide these services leaving many veterans unserved. Workshops for Warriors currently maintains a wait list of nearly 200-300 hopeful students seeking entrance. At the same time, the manufacturing industry has hundreds of unfilled middle income jobs. To address the unmet need, increased organization capacity and infrastructure is needed, thus Workshops for Warriors has a three-year $21 million campaign ($15 million for capital campaign and $6 million towards continued school operations) to support the construction of a new campus style educational facility at its current location in Barrio Logan. WFW's current seat capacity is 50 students per semester. Construction of a one acre campus with multiple training centers will increase our student capacity to 750-1,000 students per year and make a dent in the nation's advanced manufacturing skills gap. A large waiting list of veterans in San Diego County wants to help America's manufacturing industry thrive again; they also want to become more than middle-class taxpayers.
The organization was founded in 2008 by Hernán Luis y Prado, a 15-year United States Navy Officer, because he saw so many veterans and service members struggling to find a clear path back into civilian life. A chamfer is a 45-degree bevel cut across adjoining right angles, commonly used to create clearance for mating parts, simplify assembly, and eliminate sharp edges. A radius, on the other hand, replaces a raw corner with a rounded edge, improving safety and aesthetic appeal, and enhancing the fit of connecting parts.

To ensure precision and accuracy, we’ll engage our CNC machine shop to machine the chamfers or radii. Though machining does add to a part’s cost and lead time, it’s the best process for achieving critical edge specifications and preventing part rejections during inspection.
Chamfers and radii are commonly requested features in custom sheet metal fabrication that can occasionally cause confusion.
Whether your sheet metal parts need the angled edge of a chamfer or the rounded edge of a radius, there are a few things you should know.

According to the Department of Defense, roughly 250,000 service members leave the military every year. California has the highest number of veterans of any other state and San Diego is the number one destination for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, San Diego County has the third-highest number of veteran residents of any county in the nation. The city boasts more than 230,000 veteran residents. Of the veterans living in the city, the United States Census Bureau indicates more than 10,000 are currently unemployed and 16,000 live in poverty.
The Advanced Manufacturing Training for Young Veterans program provides accredited welding and machining education and job placement assistance to San Diego transitioning military and veterans. The curriculum has compressed the typical two-year time commitment to a 16-week module. The accelerated nature of the training reduces opportunity cost and financial burdens faced by transitioning military and unemployed veterans. The training is designed to prepare veterans to be well-rounded, entry level welders or machinists and the training provides certification in the nationally recognized standards of the American Welding Society, National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), Mastercam University, and SolidWorks. Certification in these programs opens doors to careers in Advanced Manufacturing, one of the fastest growing business sectors that is also experiencing a severe labor shortage. Described in the following paragraphs are the activities in the program from recruitment to graduation. Recruitment and Enrollment Potential students are recruited via word-of-mouth referrals from past participants, and by collaborating partners, including Camp Pendleton. Workshops for Warriors also reaches out to the veteran community through career fairs, meetings and events with area military bases and veterans organizations. To be eligible for the program, active duty personnel must be within 180 days of their End of Active Service (EAS) date, have official orders confirming reassignment and veterans must have received an honorable discharge. The enrollment process requires completion of an online application and interview, practical math exam and orientation with the Director of Operations who reviews prior service, career goals, and confirms veteran status. All prospective students must agree to a 95% attendance requirement. Tuition Scholarship and Stipend AssistanceThe organization is committed to making the training program accessible for all veterans seeking participation in the program. Scholarships and living stipend assistance are offered for those students who are not able to pay these costs. The programs accelerated training and condensed curriculum participation requires a 16-week full time commitment. For the veterans demonstrating commitment, but who have extremely limited financial support, Workshops for Warriors extends living stipends to help the veteran focus on studies and not survival. Training and Certification Once enrolled, students select either the welding track or machining track and begin to complete required courses. Veterans receive instruction in four leading-edge manufacturing programs: 1. Computer-Aided Manufacturing,2. Computer-Aided Design,3. CNC Machining and Turning, and 4. Welding and Fabrication.

ASM can achieve chamfers and radii using various methods, such as special punch tools, hand-filing, or shaping with a dual-action sander. Tumbling can be an effective way of adding a radius to your part’s edges. For chamfered and rounded edges with critical tolerances, however, machining is almost always the best—and only—solution.
