The rehearsal process will be similar to what you would experience in a professional rehearsal room. It will involve a supportive and collaborative process and you will be expected to contribute ideas and work as an ensemble.
* Please note although Credit-Rated Short Courses students require matriculation to get their accreditation, you will not be a full time matriculated student of RCS. Credit-Rated Short Courses do not qualify for student visas due to the short term nature of the course. You will also not qualify for a student email address or student card.
This course is aimed at people with significant acting experience who are looking to further develop their training. It is suitable for people who have attended our Acting 2 course, or have equivalent experience.
Please make sure you fully complete the Reason and Experience sections in the application form to outline why you want to join the course. You may be contacted if we need further information, this is to make sure that you are on the right course for you.

Strain hardening is one of the most-used means of adding strength to an alloy. It is the use of permanent deformation to increase the strength of the metal. Other names for strain hardening are cold work and work hardening.
There are no entry requirements for this open access course but to get the most out of it you should have some experience of performance and a practical understanding of theatre and performance skills. Ideally you will have done our Acting 1 or Acting 2 adult evening course or something similar.
The theatre company will adopt an ensemble approach to theatre practice. Students will be involved in all aspects of production and focus on rehearsal techniques, performance styles, research, staging and production.

At high levels of cold work, the material becomes very difficult to further process or form. If it must be formed, or reduced further in thickness, then annealing becomes necessary. This is a high temperature soak, which causes the grains to recrystallize. Old grains are obliterated, and new grains, complete with new dislocations, start to grow. All effects of the prior cold work disappear. This returns the strength and elongation of the material to the starting (no cold work) value. The material is then ready for any further cold work that may be necessary.
Online Credit Rated courses: – if studying an online credit-rated course from your own country (outside of UK) you are only required to submit your passport. – if studying an online credit-rated course within the UK, but do not hold a UK passport, please follow the guidance from above.

There will be a short sharing towards the end of Term 3 for invited friends and family. Dates and times will be confirmed nearer the time.
Throughout the course, you will develop technical and creative skills through practical workshops and rehearsals. This will include voice, movement, character development and staging.
We expect you to undertake a certain amount of self-directed study and preparation out with class times. Students should be open, honest, generous, respectful, hard-working and willing to work as part of a team.
By studying a credit-rated course, you will need to be matriculated to RCS*, we require some additional information from credit-rated students for this reason. Please read through the section below thoroughly before you submit. If you have any questions about what is required, please email credit-rated@rcs.ac.uk and we can help you.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
You will rehearse and perform a contemporary or classical play which will be performed for a public audience in one of the Conservatoire’s performance venues.
The degree of cold reduction determines the strength of a metal. As the percent cold work increases, so does the strength. Conversely, the total elongation decreases as cold work increases. Figure 3 shows the relationship between strength, elongation and cold work for yellow brass. If the percent cold work increases past a certain point, there are diminishing returns on strength. This is because at higher reductions, there are fewer free dislocations to become entangled. Also, the elongation (ductility, formability) decreases rapidly with cold work. Since the material is less able to plastically deform, fracture becomes much more likely.

We are offering a credit-rated option for this class, giving students the opportunity to gain SCQF credits upon submission. This will not be mandatory, however students can sign up for the credit-rated option by following the steps listed in Credit-Rated tab below. There are two separate booking links – please sign up for the course in the first instance by using the Book Now button, and then sign up for the additional credit-rated option after you have completed your course booking. For courses that require approval, students should wait until they have been offered a place before signing up for credit-rated options.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.

No discussion of strain hardening would be complete without mention of the term “temper”. Temper is a description of the amount and type of processing done to a material at the mill, including cold work and thermal treatments. This is what is meant when an alloy is described as half hard, full hard, spring temper, etc. Higher strength tempers of a given alloy will have less formability than lower strength tempers of the same alloy because some of their capacity for strain hardening has already been used up in the cold rolling process.
Cold work is one of the most important means of improving the strength of metals. However, a balance must be struck between the amount of strength imparted to the metal and the amount of ductility lost. Harder tempers like spring and superspring have high strength and low ductility (bad formability), whereas softer tempers like annealed and 1/4 hard have low strength and high ductility (very good formability). When choosing a material for a connector, it is best to use the highest strength material that still meets the formability requirements of the design.

It provides an opportunity for people age 16+ with previous drama or acting experience to work towards public performances in a Royal Conservatoire venue.

The final temper of a strain-hardened material is the amount of cold work applied to it after the final anneal. Annealing must be done at a high enough temperature and at a long enough time to destroy the old grains. The time must be short enough and the temperature low enough to prevent new grains from growing too large.

Figure 1 below shows what theoretically happens during strain hardening. A certain amount of strain (deformation) is put into the material (gray line). When the load is removed, the material returns to a state of zero stress along a path perpendicular to the elastic loading line (purple squares). When the material is reloaded, it follows the same path up to the original stress-strain curve (blue line). However, the material’s elastic limit has been increased by a certain amount. The new yield strength (green dotted line) is now substantially higher than the old yield strength (dashed red line). Additionally, the total elongation has now diminished. This increase in strength will therefore diminish ductility and formability.

This is why formability of strip material decreases with increasing temper. Precipitation hardenable alloys like copper beryllium or nickel beryllium tend to have better strength to formability ratios than alloys that are strengthened entirely by cold work, since alloys that are heat treated do not require as much cold work to reach a given strength level. Learn more about our high-strength copper-beryllium alloys here.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
Figure 2 shows the cold rolling process used to increase the temper of strip materials. The strip is passed between two rollers that exert heavy pressure. The strip is compressed through the gap and becomes much longer and thinner. The grains in the metal also become elongated. This permanent deformation causes the dislocations to pile up, which increases the strength of the material. Additionally, the larger grain boundary area serves as an inhibitor to subsequent dislocations.

The rehearsals will involve vocal and physical warm-ups, acting exercises and text work. It will be hard work – you will be expected to learn lines in good time and attend all rehearsals – but it will be a lot of fun!
When a material is permanently deformed, the dislocations move until they are stopped by something else in the crystalline lattice, like grain boundaries or alloying elements. However, one of the most effective dislocation-stoppers is another dislocation. When dislocations run on different planes and intersect, they cannot pass through each other. The dislocations pile up against each other and can become intertwined. This dislocation entanglement prevents any further permanent deformation of that particular grain without the use of significantly greater energy. This increases the strength of the material under any subsequent loading.
