SFM to RPMChart

The usual practice is to ream from 0.004" to 0.012" on diameter (eg 0.002" to 0.006" on a side) in finishing operations. Seldom does one ream over 0.012".

CNC machines are programmed by the spindle speed (RPM), but cutting data is typically given in SFM. Therefore it is common that we need to compute the SFM from a given RPM to determine the cutting speed at which our cutting tool is working. It is calculated by dividing the cutter’s circumference by the cutting speed.

Hello machinists. I'm doing some calculations on material removal rate (MRR). I have zero experience with CAM software, so I wrote a script in Solidworks that simulates an endmill's movement through a workpiece at a small time interval. That way I could calculate the material loss for each time step. This is obviously not a neat way of approaching this problem. Are you guys aware of any CAM software that is capable of calculating MRR? Thanks!

CNC machines are programmed by the spindle speed (RPM), but cutting data is typically given in SFM. Therefore it is common that we need to compute the SFM from a given RPM to determine the cutting speed at which our cutting tool is working. It is calculated by dividing the cutter’s circumference by the cutting speed.RPM to RPM Chart (Inch)Find out the SFM according to your tool’s diameter and the machine’s RPMRPM1/16"1/8"3/16"1/4"3/8"1/2"5/8"3/4"7/8"1"1-1/2"2"100235710131620232639522003710132026333946527910530051015202939495969791181574007132026395265799210515720950081625334965829811513119626260010202939597998118137157236314700112334466992115137160183275367800132639527910513115718320931441990015294459881181471772062363534711,00016334965981311641962292623935241,100183654721081441802162522884325761,200203959791181571962362753144716281,300214364851281702132552983405116811,400234669921371832292753213675507331,500254974981471962452953443935897852,0003365981311962623273934585247851,0472,50041821231642453274094915736549821,3093,00049981471962953934915896877851,1781,5713,500571151722293444585736878029161,3741,8334,000651311962623935246547859161,0471,5712,0944,500741472212954425897368841,0311,1781,7672,3565,000821642453274916548189821,1451,3091,9632,6185,500901802703605407209001,0801,2601,4402,1602,8806,000981962953935897859821,1781,3741,5712,3563,1426,5001062133194256388511,0641,2761,4891,7022,5533,4037,0001152293444586879161,1451,3741,6041,8332,7493,6657,5001232453684917369821,2271,4731,7181,9632,9453,9278,0001312623935247851,0471,3091,5711,8332,0943,1424,1898,5001392784175568341,1131,3911,6691,9472,2253,3384,4519,0001472954425898841,1781,4731,7672,0622,3563,5344,7129,5001553114666229331,2441,5541,8652,1762,4873,7314,97410,0001643274916549821,3091,6361,9632,2912,6183,9275,23611,0001803605407201,0801,4401,8002,1602,5202,8804,3205,76012,0001963935897851,1781,5711,9632,3562,7493,1424,7126,28313,0002134256388511,2761,7022,1272,5532,9783,4035,1056,80714,0002294586879161,3741,8332,2912,7493,2073,6655,4987,33015,0002454917369821,4731,9632,4542,9453,4363,9275,8907,854RPM to SFM Chart (Metric)Find out the SFM according to your tool’s diameter and the machines RPMRPM2 mm3 mm4 mm5 mm6 mm8 mm10 mm12 mm16 mm20 mm25 mm1002345681012162126200468101216212533415230069121519253137496277400812162125334149668210350010152126314152628210312960012192531374962749912415570014222936435872871151441808001625334149668299132165206900192837465674931111481862321,0002131415262821031241652062581,1002334455768911131361812272831,2002537496274991241481982473091,30027405467801071341612142683351,40029435872871151441732312893611,50031466277931241551862473093872,0004162821031241652062473304125152,50052771031291552062583094125156443,00062931241551862473093714956187733,500721081441802162893614335777219024,000821241652062473304124956608251,0314,500931391862322783714645577429281,1605,0001031552062583094125156188251,0311,2885,5001131702272833404545676809071,1341,4176,0001241862473093714956187429891,2371,5466,5001342012683354025366708041,0721,3401,6757,0001442162893614335777218661,1541,4431,8047,5001552323093874646187739281,2371,5461,9338,0001652473304124956608259891,3191,6492,0618,5001752633504385267018761,0511,4021,7522,1909,0001862783714645577429281,1131,4841,8552,3199,5001962943924905887839791,1751,5671,9582,44810,0002063094125156188251,0311,2371,6492,0612,57711,0002273404545676809071,1341,3611,8142,2682,83412,0002473714956187429891,2371,4841,9792,4743,09213,0002684025366708041,0721,3401,6082,1442,6803,35014,0002894335777218661,1541,4431,7322,3092,8863,60715,0003094646187739281,2371,5461,8552,4743,0923,865Related Glossary Terms:CNC MachineRPMCutting SpeedCircumference
